As we continue to push NVMe hard drives into the market on our computer builds, folks are still using the word SSD as the best. That is not true.
There was a time that NMVe and SSD technologies were on m.2 2280 chips. Yet, the throughput was amazingly different. Let's look back where we started.
The hard drive lineage goes back a long way, so let's start here @ ATA to IDE to SATA to SSD to NVMe.
The SATA was the wildest growth in speed from 1.5Gb/s to 3.0Gb/s to 6.0Gb/s, respectively SATA I, II, III - SanDisk explanation
Now we move forward to SSD (solid state drives) instead of SATA platter drivers, and we get higher speeds.
We did not forget about SCSI used by UNIX and MAC and heavy duty Adaptec Controllers. Not did we forget about SAS for server arrays and other types of bulk block data transfer array technologies and their array configurations. Dell shares some good detail on this... So, with our builds today, we are going with NVMe on the lower m.2 2280 port away from the upper PCI Express 16 lanes where the video card goes. Remember, avoid sharing those PCI Express 16 lanes with other SATA ASMedia and SSD controller connections. Keep all those lanes available for the NVMe m.2 2280 1TB or 2TB drive.
The price to performance bang for your buck is huge in savings going with NVMe.
