Blank piece of paper

March 14, 2018

A blank piece of paper in the hands of a great architect can lead to great solutions and great success.

Over the last 35 years, I can't tell you how much I enjoy solving a problem for a customer with just one piece of paper and a pencil or pen. One can substitute that thinking with a white board and dry erase marker as their method as well.

So, if a client has a problem, sketch it out on one piece of paper, and expand to additional pages if necessary.

In my Microsoft days, we used 3 pages; page 1 - executive level page, page 2 - summary report, page 3 - raw data and detail. This applied to any amount of financial impact.

If page 1 was worth 100k or 1mil, it did not matter. Executives have 45 seconds to decide, and you better be right. If there are questions, turn to page 2 and if there is some level of closer inspection, page 3 is there.

That blank piece of paper is where it all starts.

When you believe you have a master piece and the client/customer understands, take a picture of it with your smartphone or scan it to a PDF file and send it to yourself for safe keeping. Then convert it to a Visio or some of mind map.
