SEO - test and alternating between canonical solutions

We have been monitoring and fixing SEO for clients since 1998. We started HTML META tag optimization back in 1993 at Microsoft, and it took us until 2000 to optimize through phase I.
Fast forward 10 years, we made another huge leap for our clients and that was in 2010. Skip ahead another 10 years, and here we are again tweaking the HTML SEO options specifically in the Canonical tag that seems to be dry and worth dusting off.
For those who know Server Variables, I suggest you look at PATH_INFO and QUERY_INFO and adjust those to your META tag related to REL CANONICAL.
I might tell you more later. Its an interesting observation in the past 6 months that we have been puzzled by. We believe to have a solution.
