Linux, running OS system image backup, i wonder if its a security issue

I wonder if the live system image backup of a running Linux OS is a security violation by design?
No one has chimed in, no one has explored this deeply as far as I can tell, on spicework, stack exchange, technet, and other forums, etc.
I am getting close to an answer but nothing concrete yet. I'll find something hopefully soon.
note: do not confuse live vs running operating system. the LIVE part of the conversation is a separate CD or JUMP drive that can allow cloning of mounted drives. This is not the case. CloneZilla is not an option for the general public and clients who just want to have a drive plugged into their Linux system and have it do a full image backup while working or at lunch, or over the weekend.
