Good Tuesday morning,

Well, the Windows Server Standard 2019 installed and activated like a peach.

I did the non-GUI core only and that was fun, not.... one really has to know powershell to get around... alas, just format drive and reload with GUI... and continue on...

It is best to download the evaluation edition if you don't have the ISO from and hardware manufacturer of your hardware, and just use the DISM command online edition change and activation. Works like a charm.

activation of server standard
DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx /AcceptEula

activation of server datacenter
DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx /AcceptEula

If you do have the ISO from another OEM provider, they might include the Exchange ISO yet you don't need to specify you want the Exchange component during the roles and features. Just skip it if you don't have the activation code applicable to it.

Well, we have the 2019 Standard Server running and pushing our new development onto it.

Most of our cloud stuff is Windows Server 2012 R2 right now... and we have a dozen Windows Server 2016 Standards in the cloud, so no need to worry about stepping up and on the cloud yet. Just develop on the latest, and in the next 18-24 months move our cloud applications over to 2019 from 2012 and 2016.

So much development to complete. Some SQL, some API, some client/server, some JSON. Most of it is just portals for clients and their processing of transactions.

Since we moved our servers 9 of 11 to the cloud, and then finally decommissioned the 10th, we just spun up the 2019 edition as #12. the 11th is still on prem, and the rest is nicely tucked away in the cloud. the 41 applications are now just behaving nicely, and our DNS is nicely configured, and our cloud VPC stuff is nicely configured... and we see some interesting traffic from day to day, yet auto-ban and fail2ban is working nicely as well.

what else?

oh, don't forget your on prem backups, images and cloud backups. don't forget to record your serials and keep your relative ISO files safely tucked away on drives and thumb drives...

what else?

oh, bandwidth, if you are paying for 100/10, 400/20, 30/30, be sure to speed test your networks in the morning and in the afternoon and at night.... keep an eye on bandwidth hogs, and also keep an eye on your external IP address exposure....

PCI compliance folks don't give a rat about what you have running, they just a report against your external IP and red flag you for anything... just have to attest and confirm all is well when in fact your ports exposed are for good reasons... and your POS and credit card processing is segmented on a separate network behind other firewalls...

One can also install it in a VM using Oracle Virtualbox.

more to come...
