Programmers retire into Management to help maintain and let others take over

something Linus Torvalds said that I concur with is that he does not code anymore. he helps maintain code that is pulled, updated and pushed into code review for submission to the code branch and tree.
I agree. I am the same way. I have probably worked on more than a quarter million computers across 30 years and coded more than 10 million lines of code in that same time. Others who are professional application programmers probably have coded 5 times what I have done, 50 million lines of code, but the difference is systems engineering is different than application programming.
Linus correctly stated that going into management takes you away from the fun and grind of furnishing 2000-3000 lines of code per day, reviewed and approved.
In management, we had the fun while a young engineer to flip 1s and 0s all day long, a bit twiddler, and now a manager of other diode heads, programmers, bit twiddlers, nerds, geeks and the like across all and many technologies.
