After January 2020, Windows 7 will continue to operate. Hundreds of phone calls to Mountain Computers from those who were worried their computer would stop running were alleviated months ago and said just relax and sit back and watch Microsoft continue to release security update for at least 3 more years.
Microsoft and the press and mainstream media were all in this together to get you to buy new hardware with Windows 10. I like Windows 10 with some caveats; it is plagued with violent and dangerous updates like v1903 that takes 6-12 hours to install and comes at a cost of destroying the data on specific configurations.
Believe me, I just saw it happen yesterday and thank goodness we have offsite cloud backups to restore from, an entire working file system for a legal firm on a Windows 10 Professional share, and voila, all gone after v1903 update. Needless to say, the firm was thankful they had Carbonite backups and restored their data in a few hours.
Your best bet is to just plan to upgrade your hardware to an AMD Ryzen 7 2700 or higher, or Intel i5 8400 or i7 8700 or higher in the near future as pricing drops for the holidays and end of year.
Computer retailers and Internet resellers and wholesalers will start to drop hardware pricing with Windows 10 on it to clear out inventory for the next batch of processors coming in 2020.
