Being a guest writer for a newspaper?

What is it about writing that helps one explore their wisdom and history and be able to share it to others to help them as well as yourself?

Over the years, I have been able to be a guest writer in the editorial section of several newspapers. The editorial board for some reason needed some column space to fill and found my name, role, and experience something of interest to at least entertain me and allow me to submit five hundred words to review.
