Attribution versus Citation

in the latest Slashdot article about self-citation, I found their article interesting.
I believe self-citation is a problem. While I also believe nothing is new, we need to provide attribution when appropriate. Self attribution aka self citation is sort of okay, but not when 100% of your research is based on 100% of your own research, well, sort of.
Some people probably don't research what you are researching and if they are, are they publishing what you need to reference or is it all a closed secret and unpublished.
