In the past 2 years, Windows 10 has been notorious for long wait times when the phrase "preparing Windows" appears. For some, they believe 1-2 minutes, while the actual wait time can be up to 30 minutes.
Why? Its because of either pending updates being processed from the previous shutdown and/or more updates are being prepared c/o Microsoft.
So what do you do? Wait? Yep - you better!!!
Just walk away and give it no mind. Just come back after a few minutes and press the space bar to see if it is still processing and/or waiting for you to login.
