SATA II motherboards w/ PCie SATA III adapter

so I had some AM3+ 760 motherboards that I thought had SATA III connectors, but nope, SATA II onboard, so I tried SATA III PCIex adapter controllers and sure enough, the speed went down on the SSD and SATA III drives connected and using performance testing software. Odd.
I'll have to look deeper when I can.
