Over the last 50 years, wherever I might be, I always had a laboratory of sorts. Some of my labs were simple and some were more elaborate. Either way, it was important to establish an area to think, experiment, test, try and be able to take your working prototypes into the field for further testing; aka applied research.
What I find amazing is that sometimes your laboratory gets into a funk where you need to just clear it all out and rebuild it from scratch. It could be after years of build up of stuff, stuff, and more stuff; filling up the corners and shelves of your creative space.
In the past few months, my home laboratory has been needing some of that attention and while my work laboratory has gone through a first phase of evolution, it is due for a second phase of evolution. I should do the same for my home applied research lab.
Oh well, it will be fun to pull everything out, clean, organize, recycle, throw out, archive and reset my spaces.
As an FYI, my "cause" aka work, life, passion, love is applied research 1/2 the day, and operational support the other 1/2 of the day. This gives me the benefits of exploring new ideas and applying them in the field and in operations and production environments where the benefits are yielded right away. Then those results can be taken back into the research area the next day for further analysis and improvement. Continuous improvement is best and very invigorating.
Don't forget; if you get stuck with a production problem and research does not solve it right away; give yourself some time to experience the epiphany effect; where you will come up with the solution in your sleep and subconscious and surprise yourself the next day. I call it the systems engineers "writers block"; sort of. lol
