I was reviewing the system requirements for Windows 10 versus Windows 11 recently, and the 8-16GB of RAM along with 500GB to 1TB SSD / NVMe are still good options.
The larger question on system requirements are the business and application requirements for your work.
- Are you running virtual applications or is everything local to your system?
- Do you need more RAM versus Hard Drive space?
- Can you get away with AIO small footprint NUC system aka a micro or small form factor device or do you need a full fledged workstation with heavy duty graphics and CPU power and faster than fast RAM and hard drive(s)?
- What size of display aka monitor do you need? 27", 32", 24"? Make sure you are using high quality cables and connectors for Display Port (DP) or HDMI versus older connector types like DVI-D or SVGA.
- Are you doing heavy computing like database work, heavy graphics, complex calculations, programming, or just daily business work like email and office applications?
For each of these questions, the price point for these options can be either OEM from Dell, HP or some other manufacturer, or built to order (BTO).
For me, the sweet spot is small form factor OEM for $500-700 or $800-1000 for BTO. That can include the display monitor along with your keyboard, mouse and other options.
Oh by the way, if you need a printer, make sure it has fax capabilities and an auto-document feeder for even simple stuff, yet make it low price, and monochrome (eg. Brother MFC 2710D is nice for $200).
Either way you look at your computing requirements, the choice for computer system requirements to meet Windows 10 or 11 is doable and the prices have come back to normal in the last six months. Just shop around.
Also, do you need the TPM 2.0 requirement built in or an add-on? That will give you the ability to meet the Windows 11 requirement.
As far as Home versus Professional operating systems, I prefer Windows 10 Professional 64 bit for now through 2025 and Windows 11 Professional 64 bit come 2026. If I need additional horsepower, I usually add virtual hosting of other operating systems to give me room for Linux and other needs.
