LibreOffice l10n to Tagalog becomes a reality and project

The l10n* of LibreOffice with the Tagalog language has now become a reality and officially a project. This project started out as an inquiry at the beginning of April 2024 because the desire to expand beyond the French and Spanish language support in companies I have worked and we have supported (e.g. Microsoft product support both domestically and to France, and regional corporate medical support in Spanish).

 

*What is l10n? The abbreviation of l10n means localization; the starting lowercase 'L' followed by 10 characters and ends with 'n'. Additional abbreviations (REF 1) are associated with language internationalization, translation, localization, and globalization.

 

The need to learn and support Tagalog and other major dialects became critical mass to me and this organization a few months ago; the Philippines national language is Tagalog and has many major dialects like Illocano, Cebuano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicolano, Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinense, and others. This project is like a successful lightning strike after a dozen different attempts and approaches across 7 years occurring all in which involved my Filipino family, relatives, barangays, the Filipino country sides and communities, and overall cultural exposure to find an angle to absorb the language and help its localization and translation into technology missing its benefits.

 

The following is a screenshot of the TDF, The Document Foundation to LibreOffice, and the newly created Tagalog translation project; the information, search, history and related tools. Its just the beginning and its growing steadily and progress has already been made.

 

The project became a reality once a need was established where a gap in the translation existed.

 

The project duration will be one year or less. The project plan's scope, resources and timeline have been drafted and the work has begun. Support from the LibreOffice documentation and translation main contact and development team has been incredible, responsive, and enjoyable.
