What is the best method to layout your IT assets and inventory for a location you support?

Do you use Visio?

Do you use What's Up Gold?

Do you use Nagios XI?

Do you use Spiceworks?

The real answer is - it depends. 👍😏

In addition to those monitoring and layout features, I do like MRTG aka RRD as well as RT (Request Tracker). Both are open source and free to further analyze your network(s) and IT assets. PrinterLogic has a Printers utility as well to scan networks for your printer assets which additional information like toner levels, serial numbers, mac addresses, and more..

Key Utilities that assist with the bigger tools:

* MRTG, RRD

* Printers - Page Countster

* RT - Request Tracker

etc..

The organizational layout of your IT assets is vital for your teams and your work flow. As an IT leader, your teams if not just yourself needs a central control room and monitors to view your IT assets as they exist; to actively poll or and monitor or not, with the ability to assess, report and keep your operations fully functional. Tools like these can make your work 10 times easier.

For the last 20 years, I have used What's up Gold to layout a building with its hundreds of IT assets that need location references and IT and asset information. For a decade prior to that I was using Visio 4.0 Technical which was extremely powerful. For some environments, I will use Nagios XI. It really depends on your IT role and authorization. At a few clients in the last decade I used Spiceworks.

I prefer open source and low cost technologies that have simple methods to do incredible services.

What do you prefer? I prefer What's Up Gold, though old like me, it just knows what to do and how to do it!
