In the past year, I have seen an uptick in 1TB WD Blue and Black hard drives failing after 4-5 years, whereas, they used to last upwards of 7 years.
Failures are now more prominent and today, another 1TB WD Black manufacturer date 2016, 6 years of semi-annual usage. Weird. A few months ago, a few dozen WD 1TB Blue drives started expiring after only 4 years. I guess the MTBF has come down from my experience of 5-7 years and now 4-5 years.
Its okay, if we catch it soon enough we just clone to 500GB or 1TB WD Blue SSD drives. We were using the Samsung equivalents yet the pricing on Samsung is about 10-20% higher.
