Intel 7th versus 8th Gen processors

So, I had to look, what is the difference between 7th and 8th generation Intel processors.
I was concerned that the meltdown and other defects negatively affecting virtual machines for data centers might have a dramatic impact. In the industry, hearing that the firmware patches were slowing processors made me see if the 7th generation would be faster though an 8th generation should be unless choked by advance pipeline throttling due to security issues.

My research brought me here and this was unexpected, sort of.. an i5 8th generation beating an i7 8th generation? This was sort of expected since I have seen this over the last 3 years.
The i7 8700k was my favorite Intel recommendation for most HPC systems we built but the i5 edition was tempting. Just the customer perception of i7 inside versus i5.. you know..
