How do you know if you have lost any of your emails in a cloud based server service?
A few of my colleagues have 500,000+ email messages within 50GB of data, and more than 200+ folders.
Will they ever know if they are missing any messages due to corruption of a table, row, record or index?
I think not. As an architect, data loss is inevitable and when the data is small and neat, it's obviously noticeable.
For me, I use to keep all my email, and now I just back it up into cold storage and start anew each year. What is crazy is that I have not looked back at email that goes back over 5 years though I believe I have most of it somewhere, in an archive folder. So, when I die, there is a burn notice on my hard drives and last request instructions. Please destroy these drives. Until then, I keep cleaning out my hard space until I get some more storage space back.
If you lose access to your email account, forget about it and create a new one. It's that easy. Never look back and keep on moving forward. It's probably good that you do so all the hackers and spammers can't keep up with your changes in addresses.
More to come.
