Since 1997 when I left Microsoft, we had all sorts of email client and platform technologies. Fast forward 20 years and we still have not got any closer to something worthy of a standard, other than the transport protocols (POP, IMAP).

There are various database driven email storage types aka stores and those vary from software manufacturer (e.g. IBM, Microsoft, Open source, etc).

The one common theme between them all: create message, send message, receive message, read message.

That's it. Nothing more simple than that. Now hold on, don't forget your hat here, the layers of complexity and features now get piled on, and the mixture of devices that will interact with one store and that store will try to maintain its integrity while you mix match and muddle through so many types of clients, platforms, networks, security, permissions, configurations. It's mind numbing.

Moral of the story: keep it simple and backed up.
