Ever since Friday, after a few windows updates, my windows file and print sharing for a development workstation was unchecked and turned off. That is so odd. At first, I thought, oh DHCP and the IP changed, and figured after a few reboots I could get back to it. Nope. Had to do a net share command and yep, the shares were alive, yet why would the firewall be on, and file sharing would be off. Well, under closer inspection, it was.
Regardless, here are the three things I always look at when troubleshooting peer to peer, workstation to server, etc, and file sharing.
1. permissions, username and passwords match between clients/server, host
2. firewall, its' configured properly and confirmed
3. resource configuration, the sharing resource is alive and well
When I would run the NOC in a few ISPs, client issues were always permissions, and the clients would point at our team, our network, and we would 99% of the time, confirm it was not us, and it was them, and it was not a DNS issue either.
Managing a NOC, it's always important to know DNS plays a critical role in how clients get around your node room and data center.
