Self publishing has been a good thing since Amazon Create Space and KDP entered the market some 10 years ago. What has happened is the slow adoption rate of some material because of the massive growth and expansion.
I find Barnes and Noble good to great, and Amazon KDP to be very good to very great - overall.
One does have to hone their tools and processes effectively and efficiently to streamline publication authoring, reviews, editing, finishing and release.
