When it comes to production test servers, I love real 1U to 4U servers, building them and managing them, and getting developers to use them, help them, and push those servers to the edge/ledge. Now, if you take that to virtualization to the cloud, can you do the same? yes and no.
I prefer virtualization for production environments and real servers for production testing. You need to have skills in both arenas and maintain those skills; on prem, in the cloud, or the hybrid. Stay sharp folks.
