Yesterday, we had a little surprise. A client who told us in writing, email and verbally what to backup and what to not to backup. Why? Because some of the items were so confidential they did not even want our eyes to come across the items even by folder and filename. Therefore, in the last 2 years, we did as they asked.
Two years later, ooopppssss, they said. Their own internal backup procedures and decision failed and they lost some serious information and of course called us in to investigate, and found nothing we could do. Sadly, we had no solution, even data recovery was not possible.
Backups and verification of what to backup by key decision makers between vendors and outsourced parties might change over time, and all you can do is hope the internal folks know what they are doing and verifying daily their activities. In this client's case, it was a mix up in their decision of what to backup by themselves and by others.
It's okay. a simple corrective action will suffice and we are now backing up all their items. Moving forward.
