Wifi and 2021 - how will our routers and phones behave in 5G

In the past year, I have been watching the 5G horizon and who, what, when and where the industry is driving this technology. From an investor standpoint, its not very clear. Its like underground or under the radar.
For the technology side, T-mobile/Sprint is pushing a 5G agenda in their marketing and advertising, yet my iphone X is not there yet. will this be a software upgrade or a true hardware replacement? I do not know yet.
Will my home or work based wifi router need an upgrade as well? probably not, the cell phones and other devices will probably be able to step down to the 2.4/5.0 Ghz frequencies as well as look for 5G cellular capable towers.
