m.2 2280 NVME drives overheating

This is email thread below on my concern from m.2 2280 NVMe hard drives overheating and degrading in performance and/or just failing to work. Take heed from this advice, watch your temps when you get started with any type of solid state high usage device. Watch your temps and get a feel for what is going on.
 
In the old days, we called that the 24-48 hours burn in test, literally. That is why some companies use heat thermal imaging to monitor their builds to see if there is isolated overheating in a computer build (BTO). I know Puget Systems does that for some of my clients that have ordered from them some super high end systems.
 
Use HWINFO to see your m.2 temps. Speccy does not show m.2 temps for the version I tried yet might and I don't see the results, yet HWINFO does right up front. Try them both and compare. The UI on Speccy is nicer, yet the details on HWINFO to me IMHO is better.

Oh. Their solution is that the PRO needs the heat sink installed. Ours were not pro versions and did not come with heat sinks and I guess that is a good thing. I have seen some m.2 drives for clients come with heat sinks and I guess that is the reason.

Hope you are doing well. I was reading an article on the m.2 2280 500GB and 1TB Hard drives, like the one I have and the one you have.

The one we have is the Samsung EVO 970 (STANDARD) m.2 2280 NVMe.  My temps using HWINFO shows 38-40 C when idle and 45-49 C under load.

The one the article references is the Samsung EVO 970 PRO m.2 2280 NVMe. The article mentions the PRO temps reaching 70+C up to the max of 95 C. Amazing problem found in the PRO version versus the standard version.

The only difference between what we have, the standard EVO versus the EVO PRO, is the write speed. It appears the PRO write speed is causing the heat.

Thank goodness I am not experiencing this heat problem from my observations. Check yours and let me know.

Anyhow, thought you might be interested and check your M.2 temps
