Email privacy has been long overdue for an overhaul. Since the mid 1990's and earlier back in the day of compuserver, aol, and the like, email was sent in the clear and stored in pretty much the same format.
Today, we have layers of encryption, layers of security and layers of layers of layers of this that and the other, and it has not got any easier, just more complicated.
Can you imagine the folks who are age 60+ trying to figure out which what and where the port configuration and ssl configuration is located for both their phone, laptop, table and desktop? No way jose. They are totally lost. For me, the email backend providers have just made things more difficult as well. Not much we can do yet live with it.
Even autodiscover technology is limited. you have to have this enabled on the back end, your wifi has to be this, your network has to be that, your cellular carrier has to provide this, etc. It's not as easy and seemless as it should be.
Let's just say this: it's not that you have been hacked, you just don't know when and how. Your email has lots of juicy details and we all know that we have to consider everything public when you thought it was private. Keep your notes, passwords, and other things tucked away and a few layers of security on top of things is best.
