NOTE: This is going to take some time to write down and document all the effective and efficient methods to each and
every tool so stay tuned as we expand and elaborate on how each and every suggested software, procedure and utility is
used in the most efficient manner. If you need immediate assistance, call our office; however, if you wish for us to
prioritize our addendum please email us or call us so that we can focus our efforts. These addendum notes will date back
nearly 30 years and we hope they serve you and your company as much as they have served our company and founders.
FYI - these notes are going to be a bit raw and un-refined so take them with a grain of salt. Last Update 12/15/2011
FILE EDITORS:
PFE32 - this is one of our favorites. For a friend the 'm' editor was his friend and probably still today. We create a profile
called .dev and add all the text extensions that programmers like, and turn on line numbering, autowrap when printing, and
set the default font to something casual like Courier New.
SCRIBUS:
For Mountain Weekly Newsletters, I use Scribus once per week, and it was a tough choice to move from a Microsoft product
to use an Open Source because of the learning curve and change. After 2 months, Scribus is pretty good. I have not yet
figured out how to link within a PDF though I read the instructions.
There seems to be a glitch when I print to PDF, the output has missing chunks of data. If I close the Scribus file, and re-open
it, and then reprint it to PDF then it comes out complete. I ignore the shape messages and overlapping which is just a
layering requirement.
CLONING:
We use EaseUS ToDo Free Backup software. It has a DISK CLONE feature that works perfectly for all makes and models
of IDE and SATA drives. We use external USB to ATAPI IDE/SATA cables to connect the drives to the front panel of one of
our bench test computers (the fastest we have in the store), and start the clone. 1TB clones take about 8 hours on USB
2.0. Smaller drives like 320GB take about 3 hours.
BACKUP FILES AND FOLDERS using ROBOCOPY:
When backups of files need to be copied quickly.
Example command that I use all the time; E: is the source drive and F: is the destination drive. Make sure you the source
directory you are in and the destination directory you are in before you issue the command. robocopy e: f: /mir /w:0 /r:0
/copyall
SPYBOT Search & Destroy 1.62 (SPSD):
When installing SBSD, uncheck Tea Timer as a feature. Once SPSD is installed, Check for and Download updates from a
US source, and then close and re-open SPSD and Check for Problems. Note the Fix Selected Problems when scan is
complete. We disconnect the network cable or turn off wireless during the scan to speed up the process. When the fix is
complete (we choose not to backup the changes),, and when prompted to rescan on startup, we choose no.
CCleaner 3.0+:
When downloading CCleaner from FileHippo.com, the top right download is the latest version. When installing CCleaner,
there are two checkboxes we uncheck Add the Run and Open CCleaner to the Recycle bin, and if a Ask or Google Chrome
add-in is offered, we uncheck that.
When running CCleaner for the first time, Under the Cleaner, we uncheck the Recently Type URLS, Recent Documents,
Run in Start Menu, and other Explore MRUs and if there is one for Autocomplete History. We like to keep around the
autocomplete in your URLs, and other combo boxes. We run this tool on our systems about once per 2 months and clean
out about 600M or more of temporary and junk files and logs,
Under the Registry, we Scan for Issues and wait until 100% complete, Fix Selected Issues, No to Backup Registry, and Fix
All Selected Issues. If the issues are over 500, then it was worth the time to run the tool. We run this tool about once every
3-6 months depending on how many programs we add or remove in our work.
